Kindergarten Exit Criteria

KNOWLEDGE OF THE ALPHABET REQUIREMENTS
Recognizes and names most of the upper and lowercase letters of the alphabet 50 of 54 letters
BEGINNING PHONICS/WORD KNOWLEDGE  
Corresponds sound to letters of the alphabet 21 of 26 letters
Hears sounds in words and represents the sounds by letters 24 of 37 phonemes
Recognizes high-frequency words 25 of 50
WRITING  
Spells and writes his/her first and last name from memory Some reversals are acceptable
Copies a given sentence with accuracy  
Writes 10 minute word spree 25 words
Writes 1 sentence Makes sense and has correct capitalization and punctuation
CONCEPTS OF PRINT  
Recognizes the following ways we print language:
  • Front of book
  • Print, not pictures, carries the message
  • Letters and clusters of letters make words
  • There are first and last letters in words
  • Upper and lowercase letters are used
  • Difference punctuation marks have meaning (. and?)
  • Print is read left to right
  • Word by word matching
