Computer Maintenance Procedures for Improved Performance

Removing Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files Files

This process can be accomplished by going to the Start Menu, opening Programs, then going to Accessories, and then to System Tools and finally clicking on Disk Cleanup in the last drop-down menu.

  • A window will appear called Select Drive. Make sure that (C) Drive is chosen in the Drives box.
  • The Disk Cleanup window will appear and begin to scan and calculate preparation information.
  • A window will then appear that is labeled Disk Cleanup for (C). Click the boxes of those folders/files you want to empty. Click OK at the bottom of the window.
  • A window will appear asking if you are sure you want to delete the files. Click Yes and the cleanup will begin.

 

Performing Scandisk on Your Computer

 

NOTE: MAKE SURE ALL PROGRAMS ARE CLOSED BEFORE BEGINNING THIS PROCESS.

 

Scandisk can be accomplished by going to the Start Menu, opening Programs, then going to Accessories, and then to System Tools and finally clicking on Scandisk in the last drop-down menu.

  • A window will appear called Scandisk. Make sure that (C) Drive is highlighted in blue. Under Type of test, make sure the Standard cirlce is dotted. Click the Automatically fix errorsbox and then click Start. NOTE: This operation will take several minutes.

  • When the operation is complete a window will appear called Scandisk Results - (C:). Click the Close button to close this winodw. Click the Close button on the Scandisk window to complete the process.

 

Performing Defragmentation on Your Computer

 

NOTE: MAKE SURE ALL PROGRAMS ARE CLOSED AND YOU ARE AT THE END OF YOUR WORK DAY BEFORE BEGINNING THIS PROCESS.

Defrag can be accomplished by going to the Start Menu, opening Programs, then going to Accessories, and then to System Tools and finally clicking on Disk Defragmenter in the last drop-down menu.

  • A window will appear called Select Drive. Make sure that (C) Drive is chosen and click OK.
  • The Defragmenting Drive C window should appear and the defragging process should begin.
  • Leave your computer on and allow this process to continue overnight.
  • In the morning a window should be present with a note that the process is complete. If the defragmenter is still operating, click on Stop and choose Exit in the Are You Sure? window. Put in a work order to have your computer defragged by the Technology Department.
